'Clap a little bit more, I may share this prize with Trump': Pillay jokes in reaction to Nobel Peace win
Pillay, who is 85, said she initially thought the news of her Nobel Peace Prize win was a joke.
South African jurist Navi Pillay joked that she might share her Nobel Peace Prize with US President Donald Trump if the audience applauded her a little longer.
"If you clap a little bit more I may share this prize with Trump," Pillay said, drawing attention to the moment in a video shared on X by the secretary general of Amnesty International.
The footage showed her receiving applause in Nuremberg following the announcement of the award, reports AFP.
Pillay, who is 85, said she initially thought the news of her Nobel Peace Prize win was a joke.
"As a lawyer and a judge, I still want to verify this," she said, explaining that she wanted to make sure the announcement was genuine.
She also spoke about her work leading the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry, which operates independently and does not speak on behalf of the United Nations. The commission concluded last year that genocide was taking place in Gaza.
"The last thing I did is the delivery of the report on Gaza, naming what's happening there as genocide," she said.
Pillay added that one of the main responses to the report was praise for her courage.
"And you can imagine how surprised I was, why would you need courage to speak the truth?" she said.
The Nobel Peace Prize includes a gold medal, a diploma and prize money of $1.2 million.
The award ceremony will take place in Oslo on 10 December, marking the anniversary of the death of Swedish inventor and philanthropist Alfred Nobel, who established the prizes.
