A security guard of BDBL Bhaban in the capital's Karwan Bazar area died in a lift accident on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as Swapan Rekta, 20.

Swapan was on-duty on the eighth floor of the building on Wednesday night. The accident took place around 11.30 pm when the youth was coming down to the ground floor, said his co-workers.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

The victim's uncle Raza Chan said Swapan has passed the Higher Secondary Certificate examination and took up the job to support his family.

Sohel, a fellow of the victim, blamed poor maintenance of the lift for the collapse.

However, Mahbub Hossen, security-in-charge of the building, dismissed the claim saying that lifts of the building are maintained regularly.

Swapan died due to his carelessness, he said.
