Students Against Discrimination today (20 February) staged a demonstration accusing the Islami Chhatra Shibir of beating a student at MC College in Sylhet.

As per their earlier announcement today, more than fifty students of Dhaka University joined the demonstration which began at 9pm in front of the Raju Sculpture in Dhaka University. Prior to this, the organisation held protest rallies in front of various halls.

At the rally, the speakers said that the student organisations that had been oppressed for the past 16 years and could not even reveal their identity on campus are now engaging in dominance-based politics.

They demanded immediate organisational and legal action against those responsible for the Sylhet incident.

Abu Baker Majumder, coordinator of SAD, claimed that after July, various student organisations have joined the terrorist activities of the Chhatra League. "We will resist any kind of attack, any kind of terrorism. The attackers must be brought to justice quickly."

He said Chhatra Shibir must publish committees at all levels across the country.

Arif Sohel, member secretary of the organisation, said violence is returning to educational institutions again after the July uprising. "There are obstacles to freedom of expression. Student union elections have to be held. SAD will resist with all its might if the Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir try to bring back the violence."
