All involved in Mitford murder brought under law: Home adviser
We’ve become somewhat intolerant. Even minor incidents are escalating into violent clashes. Everyone must come forward to stop this tendency, Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury lamented

All individuals involved in the brutal killing of a scrap metal trader Lal Chand alias Sohag, in front of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital Dhaka in Old Dhaka, have been brought under the law, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said today (12 July).
"The gruesome murder of trader is deeply tragic. In a civilised society, such brutality is simply unacceptable," he told the reporters after attending a special police welfare meeting at Mill Barrack in Old Dhaka.
Responding to a question, the adviser said, "Law enforcement responded swiftly, arresting two suspects from the scene on the evening of the incident, with the Rapid Action Battalion arresting two more with firearms the next day.
"Another individual was arrested last night, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to five."
He added that the Detective Branch is also actively investigating the matter.
"We've become somewhat intolerant. Even minor incidents are escalating into violent clashes. Everyone must come forward to stop this tendency," the adviser lamented.
Beyond Mitford, Jahangir emphasised that police are taking prompt action in similar incidents across the country.
He urged policymakers, parents, teachers, doctors, and civil society to join hands in fostering greater social awareness and preventing vigilante behaviour.
"No one should take the law into their own hands," the adviser warned. "If an incident occurs, it must be reported to law enforcement, who are equipped to deal with it appropriately."
Regarding his visit to the police facilities at Mill Barrack, he said, "The purpose of the visit is to talk to them, assess their living and food conditions. We also plan to arrange a training programme here to ensure the upcoming national election is held peacefully."
The adviser also mentioned that preparations for the next general election are expected to be completed by December. "We don't know the exact date of the election — that will be announced by the Election Commission," he added.
