Tough action if AL leaders released on bail commit crimes: Home adviser
He also sought cooperation from journalists in preventing the spread of rumours on social media
Home Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has warned today (5 November) that any Awami League leader or activist released on bail will face stern action if they become involved in criminal activities.
He also sought cooperation from journalists in preventing the spread of rumours on social media. The adviser made the remarks while talking to reporters after a meeting with government officials on the law and order situation at the deputy commissioner's conference room in Gazipur today.
"Gazipur is an industrial city where incidents occur frequently, and the prevalence of drugs is also high. We discussed these issues and gave necessary instructions to address them," he said.
He added that law enforcement agencies have been instructed to remain on highest alert ahead of the upcoming national election. "The administration has been asked to ensure that the polls are free, fair, credible, and festive. There is no threat to the election," he said.
Regarding the election, he noted that several key factors determine its success — the people, the candidates, the Election Commission, the administration, and the law enforcement agencies. "If all these actors work together, the election will face no obstacles," he said.
Addressing the shortage of police in Gazipur, the adviser said, "It's true that there are fewer police personnel here. However, additional forces have already been deployed, and more will be added ahead of the election."
On the issue of Awami League leaders released on bail, he said, "If any of them commit wrongdoing after being granted bail, they will be brought under the law immediately. The courts are independent — granting bail is their jurisdiction — but if a person commits a crime after release, we will take strict legal action."
Seeking cooperation from journalists to prevent misinformation on social media ahead of the polls, he said the media plays a crucial role in countering rumours.
"Your reporting has already helped reduce the spread of false information. You are the main force in stopping propaganda originating from across the border. If you publish the truth and clarify that such rumours are false, it becomes far more effective," he said.
When asked about statements made by exiled political leaders, the adviser said, "Miscreants will say many things. But we will take every necessary step to ensure that they cannot carry out any subversive activities. For this, we seek your cooperation."
