Tarique Rahman urges calm and unity amid national tragedy

In the wake of the devastating plane crash at Milestone School and College that has shaken the nation, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has issued a statement calling for national unity, restraint, and responsible conduct during this period of mourning.
"In this time of national grief, I urge all pro-democracy comrades to remain calm and united," said Rahman in a Facebook status yesterday (22 July). "We must work towards building a society based on tolerance and self-restraince, particularly to prevent divisive conflict and mob unrest."
Tarique Rahman also expressed concern over recent reports suggesting that members of a banned student political organization were involved in instigating tensions between civilians and police forces.
"Such attempts to provoke violence and exploit a tragic moment for political gain are deeply troubling," he said. "I strongly urge these groups to refrain from using this sorrowful chapter in our history to further any personal or political agendas."
Instead, Rahman emphasized the need for national solidarity and empathy. "As a nation, we must concentrate our efforts on locating the missing, properly accounting for the deceased, ensuring the best possible medical care for the injured, and allowing the authorities to conduct a fair and transparent investigation into the cause of the plane crash."
"Our hearts are with the innocent victims and their grieving families. Bangladesh must remain united and confront every crisis with collective strength and compassion," he added.
On 21 July, a Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) F-7 BGI fighter jet crashed into the Diabari campus of Milestone College in the capital's Uttara shortly after takeoff, sparking a massive fire.
The plane had taken off from BAF Base Bir Uttom AK Khandker at 1:06pm and crashed due to a technical failure, according to the ISPR.
So far, deaths of 29 children and three adults, including the pilot and a teacher of Milestone, have been officially confirmed.
However, students who witnessed the incident and helped first responders have claimed that the death toll is much higher than what has been officially announced.
