Protesters block Dhaka-Sylhet highway, demanding cancellation of Brahmanbaria-3 re-demarcation

Brahmanbaria residents today blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in protest against the Election Commission's decision regarding the re-demarcation of the Brahmanbaria-3 electoral constituency in Bijoynagar upazila.
The blockade started around 10:45am under the banner of "Sorbo Doliyo Songram Parishad" at the Chandura Bus Stand area in Bijoynagar, halting traffic on both sides of the highway and causing subsequent sufferings for travellers.
The EC has recently separated Chandura, Harshpur, and Budhanti unions of Bijoynagar upazila from the Brahmanbaria-3 constituency and merged them with the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency in a draft delimitation.
The decision, however, has triggered protests among locals over the past few days.
During the blockade today, Sorbo Doliyo Sangram Parishad leaders demanded that the decision to redraw the constituency boundaries must be immediately cancelled, and all the unions of Bijoynagar must remain included within the Brahmanbaria-3. Otherwise, a stricter movement will be launched, they warned.
Convenor of the platform Imam Hossain and Joint Conveners Maulana Afzal Hossain and Rafiqul Islam, among others, spoke.
