DU students protest defamatory remarks by Jamaat leader, burn effigy
Dhaka University students staged a rally this evening (25 January) in protest against alleged defamatory remarks and false statements made by a Jamaat leader in Borguna targeting the university and its female students.
The demonstration began around 7:30pm in front of the university's Raju memorial sculpture area, where students also burned an effigy of the leader.
The protest followed remarks made yesterday by Md Shamim Ahsan, assistant secretary general of Barguna district Jamaat-e-Islami, at an election rally in the Kata Khali area of Patharghata in Barguna. Speaking at the rally, Shamim allegedly described Ducsu as a "den of drugs and prostitution," sparking widespread condemnation.
Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) member Hema Chakma, Ducsu Research and Publication Secretary Sanjida Ahmed Tani, Surja Sen Hall Chhatra Dal Convener Monwar Hossain Pranto, and Jagannath Hall union Vice-President Pallab Barman were present at the rally among others.
