A man was shot dead and more than 50 people were injured as two factions of the ruling Awami League clashed at Basurhat of Noakhali on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Alauddin, 30, son of Mominul Haq of Charfakira union.

After sustaining bullet injury during the clash, Alauddin was rushed to Noakhali General Hospital at 10:45pm. Later duty doctor declared him dead. Hospital's RMO Dr Syed Mohammad Abdul Azim confirmed it to The Business Standard.

Meanwhile, six policemen, including officer-in-charge of Companyganj Police Station, were injured while controlling the situation.

Supporters of local Awami League leader Mizanur Rahman were holding a rally at Rupali Chattar of the municipality in the afternoon protesting attack on upazila Awami League president Khijir Hayat Khan.

The clash erupted around 4pm when followers of Basurhat Municipality Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza allegedly carried out an attack on the protesters, triggering a turf war between the two factions.

The clash and subsequent chase-counter chase continued for hours in phases, leaving more than 50 injured from both sides.

Some vehicles and shops were vandalised and cocktails were exploded during the clash.

Earlier on 19 February, a journalist, named - Muzakkir, received bullet wounds while he was photographing and filming clashes between the supporters of Abdul Quader Mirza and Mizanur Rahman Badal. He was rushed to Noakhali General Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to bullet injuries.
