Keep 12 February polling date, revise other timelines in schedule: NCP to EC
Patwary alleged that the Awami League, with support from India, was attempting to derail the 12 February election.
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has called for revisions to other timelines in the election schedule while insisting that the polling date of 12 February remain unchanged.
Speaking to journalists after meeting the Chief Election Commissioner at the Election Commission building in Agargaon this afternoon (24 December), NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary said the Commission had given a positive assurance on extending the deadline for expatriate voter registration.
He also alleged that the Awami League, with support from India, was attempting to derail the 12 February election. He also raised doubts about the Election Commission's ability to ensure a credible and timely poll.
"If the election is to be held on 12 February, the Commission must enhance its capacity. There are still concerns about whether the vote will take place on time. We have identified certain issues and conveyed our apprehensions. Even so, we have urged the Commission to ensure that the election is held on the scheduled date," Patwary said.
Referring to the broader political context, he said the country was passing through a period of instability.
"We have demanded that the election be held on time. The Awami League is trying to sabotage the election through various conspiracies. One political party is campaigning for a 'no' vote, but we call upon the people to vote 'yes' for the reform of the country," he added.
Patwary further claimed that elements aligned with fascism were still entrenched within the Election Commission.
