‘Justice served,’ says BNP’s Salahuddin after Hasina sentenced to death
BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has said justice has been delivered, following the International Crimes Tribunal's verdict sentencing ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina to death in a crimes against humanity case.
"We will work to ensure the rule of law in Bangladesh," Salahuddin said in his immediate reaction today (17 November).
"This verdict is a milestone. Although the punishment may not fully match the gravity of the crimes, it will serve as an example so that no future government or individual can become fascist, authoritarian or dictatorial," he added.
He also remarked that this verdict proves that no matter how powerful fascism becomes or how tightly it clings to power, one day it must stand trial.
Earlier, the ICT sentenced Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity committed during last year's July Uprising.
The third accused in the case, former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, was spared the death penalty and sentenced to five years in jail owing to his becoming a state witness.
