Envoys from Russia, 3 Nordic countries meet Tarique Rahman
Several senior BNP leaders were present during the meeting.
Ambassadors of four countries, including Russia, paid courtesy calls on BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman today (20 January).
The meetings were held separately at the BNP chairperson's political office in Gulshan, Dhaka. Among those who met Tarique Rahman were Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin and the ambassadors of three Nordic countries—Sweden, Denmark and Norway.
Briefing journalists after the meetings, BNP Joint Secretary General and member of the party chairperson's Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee Humayun Kabir said there is a particular interest within the international community in Tarique Rahman and his vision for Bangladesh's development.
He said the meetings were courtesy calls and were held in a very cordial atmosphere. Discussions focused on how future cooperation could be strengthened on the basis of mutual interests, with Bangladesh's national interest given priority.
Humayun Kabir added that discussions were also held on how the BNP would work with the international community while maintaining diplomatic relations if the party comes to power through the people's mandate in the national election scheduled for 12 February, in line with its announced 31-point programme.
Responding to a question, he said no specific issues regarding Bangladesh's election were discussed. However, the envoys expressed optimism about the election and the democratic process, and conveyed their expectation that Bangladesh would move forward on a democratic path after the polls.
BNP Chairperson's Press Secretary Saleh Shibli, Advisory Council member Mahadi Amin, and International Affairs Secretary Rashedul Haque were also present at the meetings.
