Govt replaced rule of law with rule of mob, JaPa's Shameem alleges
Jatiyo Party Secretary General Shameem Haider Patwary has accused the interim government of replacing the rule of law with mob rule, warning that the country is sliding into chaos while authorities remain inactive.
"The country is sinking, and the government is just watching. We thought peace would prevail, but now the entire nation is in turmoil," he said at a protest rally in Dhaka today (2 August).
The protest was held to demand the release of arrested Jatiyo Party leaders, the withdrawal of what the party calls "false cases" against its chairman and senior leaders, and urgent action to curb mob violence and restore law and order, reads a press release.
The party alleged that police have obstructed party activists from joining the scheduled rally.
Referring to an attack on the party's Bogura office the previous day and other instances of violence against Jatiyo Party activists, Shameem said, "We filed cases over these attacks, but those cases are being withdrawn. We strongly protest this."
"The way our offices have been set on fire proves there is no functioning government in this country. The state is fractured, and we want to repair it," he added.
