Fakhrul seeks army chief's intervention over 'custodial death' of Chuadanga BNP leader
Some security force members picked up Shamsuzzaman Dablu last night under the pretext of weapons recovery and subjected him to torture, which led to his death, says Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today (13 January) called for the army chief's intervention following the custodial death of a party leader in Chuadanga's Jibannagar last night.
In a media statement, Fakhrul said people expect all crimes to be punished through judicial courts during the tenure of the current interim government.
However, the death of Shamsuzzaman Dablu, general secretary of the BNP's Jibannagar municipality unit, after he was detained and "brutally tortured" by members of security forces, is in no way acceptable to the people of the country, he added.
Some members of security forces picked up Shamsuzzaman last night under the pretext of weapons recovery and subjected him to torture, which led to his death, Fakhrul noted.
He also expressed deep sorrow over what he described as an inhuman and barbaric incident.
The extrajudicial torture and killing of Shamsuzzaman represents a gross disregard for the country's existing laws, he remarked.
Strongly condemning the incident, Fakhrul urged the army chief to intervene, and demanded justice through a fair and impartial investigation.
