BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi today (14 December) said efforts are underway to depoliticise the country.

"An adviser made a statement about reforms yesterday [13 December], and I would say that she lied," Rizvi said after paying homage to the intellectuals at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorials in Mirpur today (14 December).

"All the reform in the world has been done by politicians in parliaments. Excessive focus on reforms and blaming politicians reflects ignorance of history," he added.

"Reform is a continuous process. The injustices in society cannot be eradicated in a single day. It requires cooperation at all levels," added the BNP senior joint general secretary.

Such a remark from Rizvi comes a day after the Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan urged political parties to take accountability for decades of stagnation in reforms, saying if political reforms cannot be achieved without the involvement of political parties, why haven't they been implemented in the last 53 years?

The BNP leader also said the nation will not accept the misinformation which is being thrown at the country from outside, including the threat to take over Chattogram.

"We are an independent, sovereign country. We will not accept anyone's slavery," Rizvi added.

Various leaders and activists of BNP were present at the Memorial with Rizvi.

Earlier, BNP paid tributes to martyred intellectuals by placing a wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur, marking the Martyred Intellectuals' Day.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, along with some party senior leaders, placed the wreath around 9:15am and stood in solemn silence there for some time as a mark of respect to the great national heroes who lost their lives for the cause of the country.
