Don't want repeat of fascist-era enforced disappearances, killings: Rizvi
Expressing concern over the disappearance of veteran journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar, Rizvi said, “The interim government is not involved in Bibhuranjan's disappearance.”
The people of Bangladesh do not want to witness a repeat of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings reminiscent of the "fallen fascist era," BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said today (22 August).
He made the remark at a prayer gathering held at the party's Naya Paltan office, organised by Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal's Dhaka-South unit.
Expressing concern over the disappearance of veteran journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar, Rizvi said, "We are certain that under this government, none of us will fall victim to enforced disappearances or extrajudicial killings. The interim government is not involved in Bibhuranjan's disappearance."
"But, the government must investigate whether there is another mystery behind this case, or an international group is involved in this," he added.
The BNP leader further said Bangladesh had come to a relatively stable situation after enduring long periods of turmoil, and now unresolved issues in the struggle for democracy must be settled.
Criticising recent proposals to introduce a proportional representation (PR) system, Rizvi said, "Suddenly, there is talk of imposing PR. The people of Bangladesh are not familiar with this system — it is very complicated in our context.
"Why is there an attempt to impose such a method? People struggled and shed so much blood to regain their voting rights; why should there be secrecy about it? If voters elect parties instead of candidates, political parties will become authoritarian."
