Chattogram-12: LDP's Yakub Ali regains candidacy following High Court verdict
On Thursday (22 January), a High Court division bench comprising Justice Rajik-Al-Jalil and Justice Md Anwarul Islam declared Yakub’s nomination valid.
Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader M Yakub Ali has regained his candidacy in the Chattogram-12 (Patiya) parliamentary constituency following a verdict by the High Court.
He has been allotted the party symbol "Umbrella" as the candidate of the 10-party alliance.
The symbol was formally handed over yesterday (23 January) at the Chattogram Circuit House by Chattogram Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah.
On Thursday (22 January), a High Court division bench comprising Justice Rajik-Al-Jalil and Justice Md Anwarul Islam declared Yakub's nomination valid.
The court also directed the Election Commission and the concerned returning officer to promptly allot the election symbol, removing any remaining legal obstacles to his campaign.
His nomination was cancelled after he was shown as a loan defaulter in the Credit Information Bureau (CIB) report of Bangladesh Bank. However, there was a stay order from the High Court in the matter.
Despite this, the Election Commission rejected his appeal. Following a prolonged legal battle, he eventually regained the validity of his nomination through a High Court verdict.
Speaking on the matter, Yakub's lawyer Advocate Abdul Momen Chowdhury Rifat said, "The Honourable High Court Division has declared his nomination valid and directed the Election Commission to quickly allot the election symbol. He can now fully participate in the election campaign."
In the Chattogram-12 (Patiya) constituency, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mohammad Faridul Alam had also been allotted the scale symbol.
However, the 10-party alliance had originally nominated LDP's Chattogram South district President M Yakub Ali as its candidate.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Yakub said, "I am the alliance's nominated candidate. Because there were complications regarding my candidacy, the Jamaat candidate did not withdraw the nomination earlier. Now discussions are ongoing among the responsible leaders of the alliance. I hope the issue of the alliance candidate will be resolved amicably."
