Attacks on press offices a 'planned attempt' to derail polls: BNP's Salahuddin
BNP coordinating with government to ensure security for Tarique Rahman's homecoming and reception on 25 December
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed today (19 December) termed the arson and vandalism at the offices of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo a "planned attempt" to obstruct the upcoming national election.
Speaking to journalists during a views exchange meeting in Gulshan, the senior BNP leader asserted that such acts of sabotage would not succeed in thwarting the country's democratic journey.
He also criticised the interim government's failure to prevent the violence, stating that security should have been beefed up at "previously identified locations."
His remarks follow a night of unprecedented violence that left the country's two leading newsrooms in ruins.
The attacks were reportedly triggered by news of the death of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, who succumbed to gunshot injuries last night (18 December).
Tarique's return
During the meeting, Salahuddin Ahmed also touched upon the upcoming return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
He confirmed that the party is coordinating with the government to ensure security and logistical support for his homecoming.
"The government is cooperating regarding security matters," Salahuddin said, adding that a reception ceremony for Tarique Rahman is scheduled to take place on 25 December in the capital's 300-feet area.
