Failing to obtain registration as a new political party, Md Tarek Rahman, member secretary of Amjanatar Dal, has started a hunger strike unto death in front of the Election Commission (EC) building in Dhaka today (4 November).
Tarek took position in front of the main gate of the EC building in Agargaon around 4pm, holding a placard that read "Hunger strike unto death demanding registration."
Tarek Rahman said, "The Election Commission has excluded our party from the registration list without giving any reason. We will not leave until we get registration."
Earlier in the day, the EC announced that three political parties — the National Citizen Party (NCP), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), and Bangladesh Aam Janagan Party, are set to receive registration as political parties after fulfilling the required conditions.
According to EC sources, ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election, 143 parties had applied for registration.
Of them, 121 applications were rejected during initial scrutiny, while the remaining 22 underwent further verification.
After verification and scrutiny, the EC decided to grant registration to three parties.
EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said that after resolving appeals and objections, the final list of registered parties will be published in November.
