Aam Janatar Dal finally receives EC registration
The party would not join any political alliance and would contest all 300 parliamentary seats independently, says party General Secretary Tarek Rahman
Ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election, the Election Commission (EC) has finally granted registration to Aam Janatar Dal after resolving objections raised against its application.
The party has been allotted the election symbol 'Butterfly'.
The registration certificate was formally handed over today (21 December) by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed to Aam Janatar Dal General Secretary Tarek Rahman.
Speaking to reporters after receiving the registration, Tarek said the party would not join any political alliance and would contest all 300 parliamentary seats independently.
Earlier, the EC held a hearing on 15 December to resolve two objections related to the party's registration application.
Following the hearing, the commission said Aam Janatar Dal had fulfilled all the conditions for registration under Chapter 6A of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, and was therefore registered as a political party to the satisfaction of the commission.
On 4 November, after failing to secure registration, Tarek staged a hunger strike in front of the EC headquarters, holding a placard demanding registration for Aam Janatar Dal.
At the request of BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, the hunger strike was eventually called off after 134 hours.
