11-party alliance announces rallies in all divisions to build public opinion, carry out protests
Core demands include the implementation of the referendum vote and the resolution of public suffering, the energy crisis, and control of commodity prices
The Jamaat-led 11-party alliance has announced a series of rallies across seven divisional cities demanding implementation of the referendum verdict, culminating in a grand rally in Dhaka in October.
The programme was announced today (30 April) by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General and Coordinator of the liaison committee of the 11-party alliance AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad, following a meeting of the committee.
Earlier in the day, at around 11am, the committee held a meeting at the central office of Jamaat-e-Islami in Moghbazar area in the capital.
Azad said, "Our core demands are the implementation of the referendum and the resolution of public suffering, the energy crisis, and control of commodity prices.
"Other demands include improving law and order, stopping extortion, terrorism, anarchy, and encroachment, resolving problems in the health sector, ending corruption in health and education, and stopping violence on campuses to ensure an environment conducive to education and restore peace in the country, which is essential for the development of democracy."
"The government is excessively politicising everything, appointing only its own party members in recruitment, transfers and promotions," he added.
"Instead of holding local government elections, party loyalists have been appointed as administrators. Against all these, we have taken programmes to build public opinion and will carry out protests, rallies and processions on the streets," he further added.
According to the announcement, divisional rallies will be held on 16 May in Rajshahi, 13 June in Chattogram, 20 June in Khulna, 27 June in Mymensingh, 11 July in Rangpur, 18 July in Barishal, and 25 July in Sylhet.
Culminating the movement, a grand rally will be held in Dhaka in October.
Azad further said that the alliance has taken some other decisions such as the formation of liaison committees at the district level where its top leaders and central committee members will go to the divisional level.
Exchange of views with professionals, civil society members, media workers and citizen representatives will be held in every metropolis and various districts including the capital Dhaka.
A budget reaction programme will be held in Dhaka, he noted. In addition, the 11-party alliance will exchange views with people from different classes and professions in Dhaka.
