Police file 3 cases over Hathazari mayhem, accuse Babunagari in 2

Police have filed three cases against more than 3,000 named and anonymous people with Hathazari Police Station, for the mayhem carried out by leaders and activists of Hefazat-e-Islam in the upazila recently.

Junaid Babunagari, convener of Hefazat-e-Islam and ameer of its recently dissolved central committee, has been sued in two of the cases for his alleged involvement in the violence.

Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station, confirmed the news to The Business Standard, saying the cases were filed on Thursday.

Asked about the delay in filing the cases, the OC told media that it took time to verify the identities and names of those involved. The genuine offenders were accused in the cases after a rigorous verification process so that innocent people are not harassed.

In the case filed by special branch police constable Md Solaiman, sixteen people, including Hefazat leaders Junaid Babunagari, Mir Idris, Nasir Uddin, Jakariya Noman, and Ahasan Ullah, were accused by name, and around 200 were accused anonymously.

According to the case statement, Solaiman was picked up while discharging his duties in Hathazari on 26 March and was detained in a Madrasa where he received death threats.

Junaid Babunagari and 73 other Hefazat leaders, along with 2,500 to 3,000 unnamed people, were sued in another case filed by police inspector Amir Hossain.

Apart from that, sub-inspector Harun-or Rashid filed another case bringing allegations against BNP central executive committee member Mir Helal Uddin, Chattogram District North Unit Juba Dal vice-president Syed Iqbal, and 58 other people.

In the case, 250 to 300 unnamed people were also sued.

It was alleged in the case that the accused people created unrest, set fire to vehicles, obstructed public movement by putting up barricades on streets, vandalized police stations, land offices, and clashed with police in Hathazari Sadar and Isapur during the recent strike called by Hefazat-e-Islam.
