Sheikh Hasina said that soon after independence, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had introduced women's rights in the Constitution of newly- formed Bangladesh.

"Bangabandhu always believed in economic independence for women," she added.

Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League chief, said that her party's manifesto believes and practices equal rights for women.

"The society will go forward with the contributions of more and more educated and independent women," she said further.

The prime minister also showed respect to the thousands of women were raped and tortured during the Liberation War of 1971, who later got the status of Birangana from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
