Pay RMG workers on time: Labour ministry to the owners

KM Ali Azam, secretary to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, urged the Readymade Garment (RMG) owners to pay their workers salary and bonus on time ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

KM Ali Azam made the appeal at a briefing after a core committee meeting on Crisis Management Affairs at the ministry on Sunday. Monnujan Sufian, state minister for Labour and Employment, chaired the event through video conference.

A total of 64 teams, consisting of the officials at the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, are monitoring the industrial areas across the country so as to oversee if the factory owners are paying their worker salary and festival bonus before Eid, said the labour secretary.

Azam also informed that the teams have been directed to resolve conflict between the owners and the workers in the event that any untoward situation arises regarding salary and bonus disbursement.

“RMG workers in Gazipur zone will avail Eid vacation from August 11 to 17, while for the workers in Savar, Ashulia Hemayetpur, and Manikganj zones the vacation will start from August 11 and continue until 18,” said the labour and employment secretary.

Among others, Dr Rezaul Haque, Additional Secretary to the ministry of labour and employment; Abdus Salam, Director General of Industrial Police; and Shib Nath Roy, Inspector General at the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, were also present at the core committee meeting.
