2 killed after car crashes into Mohakhali Flyover divider and catches fire
The identity and whereabouts of another victim, who was also injured in the crash, are yet to be known.
Two men died after a speeding car crashed into the road divider of the Mohakhali Flyover in Dhaka and caught fire yesterday (8 August).
The accident occurred at around 2:20am yesterday (8 August), according to police.
Talking to The Business Standard this morning (9 August), Banani Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Siddiq Hossain said the car was moving at high speed when it hit the divider just before getting on the flyover. The fire started very quickly after the collision.
"Locals rushed to the scene and rescued three people from the burning car. One of them was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, and another was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital [DMCH]," he said.
Both victims passed away later while undergoing treatment at the hospitals. Their autopsies would be conducted at DMCH, added SI Siddiq. "Both deceased, who appeared to be in their late 40s, are yet to be identified."
He said the identity and whereabouts of the third victim, who was also injured in the crash, are yet to be known as well.
Inspector Lima Khanam of the Fire Service control room said, "The car, a Corolla Hybrid with registration Dhaka Metro Kh-12-4042, lost control and crashed into the divider. Fire-fighters from Tejgaon Fire Station arrived at 2:34am and doused the fire by 3:05am. No injured or deceased individuals were found at the scene after the fire was put out."
Police said they are reviewing nearby CCTV camera footage to locate the third individual and investigate the cause of the accident.
DMCH police outpost In-Charge Inspector Md Faruk confirmed that the bodies of two victims were kept in the morgue, and autopsies will be carried out.
