Justice Abu Sayeed’s death anniversary on Friday
Friday marks the 37th anniversary of the death of Justice Abu Sayeed Chowdhury, a leading organiser of Bangladesh's Liberation War and a former president.
A Dua Mahfil for him will be held at Dabail Jamia Ashrafia Madrasha in Tangail, reads a press release.
Justice Abu Sayeed spontaneously resigned as vice chancellor of Dhaka University on 15 March 1971, to protest the killing of two students by the Pakistani Occupation Army on campus.
He later played a key role in rallying international support for Bangladesh as a special envoy of the provisional government.
In September 1971, he led a distinguished 16-member Bangladeshi delegation to the UN General Assembly. In 1985, he was unanimously elected chairman of the UN Human Rights Commission.
In the 1980s, Justice Abu Sayeed was a key figure in the anti-autocracy movement and authored five books on the Liberation War, human rights, and law. He also made significant contributions to various religious and charitable establishments in Tangail.
He was the only son of former provincial assembly speaker Abdul Hamid Chowdhury. His sons include former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Abul Hasan Chowdhury and ex-banker Lion Abul Kasem Chowdhury.
His family has requested everyone to pray for the salvation of his departed soul.
