City Group Chairman Fazlur Rahman passed away in the early hours today (25 December).

He breathed his last around 4am this morning at United Hospital in the capital, a senior City Group official confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.

The night before, Fazlur Rahman was rushed to the hospital after he suddenly fell sick. He was suffering from asthma (respiratory disease) for an extended period. 

His namaz-e-Janaza will be held at Gendaria's Dhupkhola field after Asr prayers today.

Fazlur Rahman is survived by his wife, one son, and three daughters.

In 1972, City Group began its operations with the production of mustard oil. At that time, Fazlur Rahman mainly invested in production and trading.

Later, Fazlur Rahman started expanding his business by investing in other fields.

City Group undertook more projects and initiatives in the early 90s. 

Currently, there are more than 40 companies under the conglomerate.

With an annual turnover of around Tk25,000 crore, City Group employs over 25,000 individuals.

City Group exports products to various countries in addition to the domestic market with a vision "to become a leading Bangladeshi conglomerate in the global arena operating responsibly and sustainably for making a better society".

Some of its popular brands include - TEER, Bengal Tea, Jibon drinking water, Sun, Natural, Quick Bite and Candy.

Sister concerns of the group are - Purbagaon Economic Zone, Hoshendi Economic Zone, Rupshi Flour Mills Ltd, City Edible Oil Ltd, City Economic Zone Ltd, City Auto Rice & Dal Mills Ltd, Khan Brothers Ship Building Ltd, City Tea Estat Ltd, Shampa Flour Mills Ltd, Rahman Synthetics Ltd, CSI Power & EnergyLtd, City Sugar Industries, City Seed Crushing Industries Ltd, Deepa Food Products Ltd, City Feed Products Ltd, VOTT Oil Refineries Ltd, Farzana Oil Refineries Ltd, SHampa Oil Mills Ltd, and City PET Industries Ltd.

According to the City Group website, they aim to blend world-class technology, innovation, and local entrepreneurship to provide hygiene, health, and excellence to consumers. 

City Group's Board of Directors includes Chairman and Managing Director Fazlur Rahman, alongside five directors: Hamida Rahman, Md Hasan, Farzana Rahman, Shampa Rahman, and Deepa Rahman.
