Metro rail to open extended route up to Kamalapur in January 2027
DMCTL officials said that as of December 2025, all 177 piles, pile caps, piers and station columns for the extension had been completed.
Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMCTL), which operates the metro rail service in the capital, is expected to launch its extended service up to Kamalapur station on New Year's Day in 2027, officials said today (10 January).
"We have completed 69 percent of works to extend the 1.16-kilometre section of MRT Line-6 from Motijheel to Kamalapur," said DMCTL Managing Director Faruque Ahmed.
He said the Kamalapur section was expected to be opened for commuters on 1 January, 2027, as construction work was being carried out in full swing.
DMCTL officials said that as of December 2025, all 177 piles, pile caps, piers and station columns for the extension had been completed.
They said construction of the station's concourse roof, platform slabs, precast parapet walls, steel roof structure and steel erection had also been completed, while 25 out of 27 spans had already been lifted.
In addition, about 2,800 square metres of brick wall and plaster work at the concourse level have been completed, officials said.
According to DMCTL officials, focus has now shifted to activities including agreements for installing electrical and mechanical systems.
The total length of MRT Line-6 is 21.26 kilometres, stretching from Uttara North's Diabari to Kamalapur.
The intermediate stations are Uttara Centre, Uttara South, Pallabi, Mirpur-11, Mirpur-10, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Karwan Bazar, Shahbagh, Dhaka University, Bangladesh Secretariat and Motijheel.
Commercial operation of the country's first metro rail service from Uttara to Motijheel began in November 2023.
At present, the first train departs Motijheel station at 7am and the last train at 10:10pm. From Uttara North station, the first train leaves at 6:40am, while the last service departs at 9:30pm.
