Miscreants shot dead a Union Parishad member at the Baghaichhari Upazila Parishad office in Rangamati on Wednesday noon.

The deceased Samar Bijoy Chakma, 38, was in the room of the Upazila Project Implementation Office (PIO) at the UP office when he was shot.

Upazila Project Implementation Officer Nurnabi Sarkar, who was present in the room, said, "Bijoy was talking to me about a project. Two or three people were peeking out of the door and one of them entered the room, shot Samar Bijoy in the chest and quickly left the scene."

Samar was a member of Ward No 1 of Rupkari Union. He was reportedly involved in the politics of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samity (MN Larma).

Baghaichhari Upazila Chairman and the legal secretary of MN Larma central committee, Sudarshan Chakma, claimed Santu Larma supporters were responsible for the attack. He also demanded the arrest and trial of those involved in the killings.

However, none of the Santu Larma leaders could be reached for comment.

Baghaichhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Anwar Hossain Khan, confirmed the incident and said, "We came to the spot after receiving the news and saw the UP member's bullet sustained dead body lying on the chair."
