Mega Mart fined for selling local clothes as imported in Ctg
The store was also warned against selling unauthorised or misleading products in the future

The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) today fined Tk1 lakh to Mega Mart, a popular clothing retailer in Chattogram, for falsely marketing locally made apparels as imported products.
A team from the DNCRP conducted a raid at Mega Mart's outlet in Terribazar, one of Chattogram's largest clothing markets, this afternoon and found that the retailer was misleading customers by labeling locally produced clothing as foreign brands, exploiting consumer trust.
"Mega Mart is a well-known brand in Chattogram, and people rely on them for quality products. However, they were selling locally made clothes as imported ones, which is a serious breach of consumer trust," said Faiz Ullah, deputy director of DNCRP Chattogram.
According to the officials, when asked to provide documentation proving that the garments were imported, Mega Mart's representatives failed to do so. Initially, they insisted that the products were foreign-made but later admitted that they were actually manufactured in Bangladesh.
"If they are deceiving us, they are certainly misleading their customers even more," Faiz Ullah added.
The authorities also found unauthorised and unverified cosmetic products at the store. Some imported cosmetics were being sold at high prices without proper import documentation, including missing importer labels.
Officials suspect that these items might be counterfeit or adulterated.
Following the inspection, the DNCRP ordered Mega Mart to ensure that all locally produced garments are properly labeled as "Made in Bangladesh."
The store was also warned against selling unauthorised or misleading products in the future.
Assistant Director of DNCRP Chattogram Anisur Rahman and President of the Terribazar Business Association Abdul Mannan were also present during the operation.
