The incident took place in 2023 in the Kadamtali Khalpar area in the capital

A Dhaka court today (13 April) convicted and sentenced a man named Mizan Sardar to death for murdering his wife, Rupa Akter, by pouring hot oil on her while she was asleep.
The incident took place in 2023 in the Kadamtali Khalpar area in the city.
Judge Munshi Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 pronounced the judgment in the presence of the convict and sent him back to jail with a conviction warrant.
The court also fined Mizan, son of Awal Sardar from village Baburhat under the Nazirpur Police Station in Perojpur, Tk1 lakh.
According to case documents, Rupa and Mizan were married in 2013 and had two children. Mizan frequently physically abused Rupa, demanding dowry. To protect his daughter from Mizan's cruelty, Rupa's father gave him a piece of land and a shop.
On 6 May 2023, Mizan tortured Rupa again, demanding more dowries. Around 3am, while Rupa and her two children were asleep, Mizan heated some cooking oil in a frying pan and poured it on Rupa.
The building's caretaker heard Rupa's screams, rescued her and her children, and rushed them to the Burn Unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Rupa succumbed to her injuries on 25 May.
Before her death, Rupa made a dying declaration before Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Sheikh Muzahidul Islam on 14 May. Accused Mizan Sardar also gave a confessional statement in court.
