East of Eden: A thoughtful, if uneven, adaptation

Steinbeck's East of Eden is a novel of enormous thematic weight, and adapting it for a contemporary audience is no small feat. Zoe Kazan's seven-part Netflix miniseries — made with co-showrunner Jeb Stuart — mostly rises to it, delivering an emotional, compelling retelling of a beloved classic. Notably, this is a far more faithful attempt than the 1955 film by Kazan's own grandfather, Elia, which famously launched James Dean but tackled only the book's final third.

The show opens with a bloodied, battered woman, Cathy, crawling to the doorstep of the Trask brothers. The elder, Adam, rushes to take her in; the younger, Charles, takes one look and warns him it's a mistake.

From there we learn the brothers' backstory and their fraught bond with their father, Cyrus (Tracy Letts), a one-legged Civil War veteran who raises them with military rigor. Cyrus's blatant favouritism toward gentle, passive Adam poisons the relationship into a spiral of love, hate and jealousy — made worse when he enlists Adam for the army, the very life the harder-edged Charles craved, leaving Charles stuck on the farm. The night before Adam leaves, a resentful Charles nearly beats him to death.

Years later, with both parents gone, the brothers reconcile and build a decent life together — until Cathy reappears. This enigmatic woman, who refuses to reveal anything of her past, captures Adam's heart, and despite Charles's warnings he marries her and moves to California's Salinas Valley.

Cathy has long been one of literature's most controversial figures, and Florence Pugh's performance is the show's gravitational centre. She plays Cathy as a clinical psychopath — a creature of pure instinct who treats any threat to her agency as a lethal attack to repay with interest — exactly as Steinbeck intended, but with just enough ambiguity to question society's hand in her monstrosity without excusing her as a victim

Charles's distrust proves warranted. Cathy's backstory reveals a born manipulator who leaves ruined men in her wake, fakes her own death and burns down her family home — killing her parents — then turns to prostitution as a cold, pragmatic path to independence and money, rare freedoms for a woman in the early 1900s. There, a brutal encounter with her lover and employer leaves her skull broken. She never wants the marriage or the children, yet circumstance saddles her with twins, and her choices send trauma rippling down the generations.

Cathy has long been one of literature's most controversial figures, and Florence Pugh's performance is the show's gravitational centre. She plays Cathy as a clinical psychopath — a creature of pure instinct who treats any threat to her agency as a lethal attack to repay with interest — exactly as Steinbeck intended, but with just enough ambiguity to question society's hand in her monstrosity without excusing her as a victim. Pugh works in subtle glances, flickers of calculation and sudden eruptions of terror; she makes hidden depths legible on the surface.

Here the series makes a telling intervention: where Steinbeck believed monsters are born, Kazan leans toward the idea that they are made, adding a childhood origin that explains Cathy's later isolation. It's a humane choice, though it does soften the singular ferocity of her early scenes.

If Pugh is one half of the show's beating heart, Hoon Lee is the other. As Lee, the Trasks' Chinese American cook, he presents a pidgin-speaking servant to racist strangers while, behind closed doors, debating philosophy and scripture with neighbor Samuel Hamilton (a warm Ciarán Hinds).

Kazan expands the role — reprehensibly cut from the 1955 film entirely — into the series' moral core, giving Lee his own arc and making him the voice of its governing idea: timshel, the Hebrew "thou mayest," which insists on individual choice over fixed fate. His quiet, wounded dignity deepens as Cathy simplifies, and the two performances balance each other beautifully.

The men around them fare unevenly. Mike Faist makes Charles dangerously magnetic in limited screen time, but Christopher Abbott's Adam — an innately good man undone by what he refuses to see — can tip into a single mournful note, leaving the drama slightly imbalanced.

Visually, the show is a pleasure. The colour grading leans into jewel-toned blues and greens cut with sepia, giving scenes the feel of an old photograph; vintage earth tones and a literary, almost cottagecore texture meet a darker psychological atmosphere, and mirrors recur as reflections of fractured inner lives. The costuming is period-right without distraction.

Kazan reworks the novel's structure for the screen and treats the source with real reverence, even if some of its philosophical heft is lost in favoring Cathy's story. As a high-quality family saga, it is brilliant, compelling television; as a full excoriation of human nature, it occasionally lacks the weight it reaches for.

Either way, Netflix has stepped away from mass-produced disposability and made something genuinely worth your time — a show that asks hard questions and lingers long after the credits.
