Leftist parties boycott NCC meeting over constitutional principles dispute
The Consensus Commission has proposed including "equality, human dignity, social justice, and religious freedom and harmony" as the fundamental principles of state policy

Several left-leaning political parties boycotted the Consensus Commission meeting tonight (31 July in protest against the commission's proposal to introduce new fundamental principles of state policy.
The parties include the Bangladesh Communist Party (CPB), Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, and Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist).
The boycott took place at 9:10pm during the final stage of the meeting at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
The Consensus Commission proposed including "equality, human dignity, social justice, and religious freedom and harmony" as the fundamental principles of state policy.
However, the leftist parties objected, claiming the proposal excluded the original four pillars of the 1972 Constitution — nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism.
Following their boycott, party leaders addressed the media, stating that the proposed omission of fundamental principles was unacceptable and contradicted the spirit of the Liberation War.
