Lawyer beaten to death after motorcycle-car collision in Bashundhara area
According to police and family members, Naeem Kibria hailed from Pabna Sadar upazila and was the son of Golam Kibria.
A lawyer was beaten to death in Dhaka's Bashundhara Residential Area Wednesday night after his car collided with a motorcycle, police said.
The victim, Naeem Kibria, 35, was attacked around 10pm, according to Vatara Police Station Sub-Inspector Ariful Islam. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and later declared dead.
Police said Naeem was driving a private car in the Bashundhara area when it collided with a motorcycle. Following the collision, a group of unidentified youths, including the motorcycle rider, allegedly dragged him out of the vehicle and assaulted him.
"They beat him brutally and left him lying on the road," SI Ariful said.
Upon receiving information, Naeem's cousin Rafiqul Islam rushed to the spot and took him to nearby Kurmitola General Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
The police later recovered the body from the hospital and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for post-mortem examination.
According to police and family members, Naeem hailed from Pabna Sadar upazila and was the son of Golam Kibria. He worked as a lawyer at the Pabna District and Sessions Judge's Court.
Speaking to reporters, Rafiqul said Naeem had come to Dhaka about 10 days earlier and had been staying at his house in Purbachal.
"There is a case against Naeem in Pabna related to the July uprising. He came to Dhaka to seek bail from the High Court in that case," he said.
Describing the events of the night, Rafiqul said Naeem had gone out in a friend's private car. When he later tried to contact him, a security guard from the Bashundhara area answered the phone and told him that Naeem had been beaten and left seriously injured.
"I immediately went there, rescued him and took him to the hospital," he added.
Police said an investigation is under way and efforts are being made to identify and arrest those involved in the killing.
