The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against seven former government officials, including ex-director general of Bangladesh Railway Md Tohidul Anwar Chowdhury, over alleged state losses of nearly Tk598 crore caused by the purchase of ineffective and unsuitable DEMU trains.
ACC Assistant Director Raju Ahmed lodged the case at the commission's Integrated District Office in Dhaka yesterday (16 September), an ACC senior official confirmed today (17 September).
According to the case statement, the accused colluded in fraud and forgery while in office. The project was approved without conducting a proper feasibility study or viability assessment.
As a result, ineffective and loss-making trains incompatible with Bangladesh's railway infrastructure and technology were procured, leading to the misuse of state funds for personal and vested interests.
The ACC investigation found that this caused financial losses of Tk598.84 crore to the state.
The case has been filed under sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471, 109 of the Penal Code and section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.
