ACC approves case against ex-deputy speaker Tuku's son for failing to submit asset statement

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved filing a case against SM Asif Shams, son of former deputy speaker and former state minister for home affairs Md Shamsul Haque Tuku, for failing to submit a statement of assets within the stipulated timeframe.

Mohammad Aktarul Islam, deputy director and public relations officer of the ACC, confirmed the matter today (25 August), reads a press release.

According to the ACC, the commission approved filing the case against Asif Shams under Section 26(2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, for failing to submit his asset statement.

The approval came during an inquiry into allegations that Shamsul Haque Tuku had amassed substantial wealth through economic crimes by abusing his political influence.

As part of the inquiry, the investigating officer recommended serving an asset statement form on Tuku's son, Asif Shams.

The form was subsequently served on Asif at his permanent address on 16 January 2026 in the presence of two witnesses. He was instructed to submit the statement within 21 working days.

The deadline expired on 18 February, but Asif did not submit the statement or seek an extension, according to the ACC.

The commission subsequently approved filing a case against him for failing to submit the statement within the stipulated timeframe.

Meanwhile, the ACC filed a case against Shamsul Haque Tuku on 23 December 2025 at its integrated district office in Pabna over allegations that he acquired assets beyond his known sources of income. The case is currently under investigation.

The ACC has also ordered Tuku's other son, SM Nasif Shams, and his wife, Mumtahina Mostofa, to submit statements of their assets over allegations of illegal wealth accumulation. Their cases are currently under inquiry.
