Law and order situation may worsen in Ramadan: RAB DG
Extortionists backed by political parties are now committing robberies, he says

The country's overall law and order situation can worsen in Ramadan, RAB Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman said today (23 February).
Speaking to reporters after an inspection of a check post in the capital's Matualil area in the early hours of the day, he also said extortionists backed by political parties are now committing robberies, mugging and other crimes amid a crackdown on extortions following the mass uprising on 5 August 2024.
"Before 5 August, those involved in these crimes were under political protection. Previously, they engaged in extortion discreetly, but such activities no longer exist. Since no one can carry out such operations under political cover, they are committing other criminal activities," Shahidur said.
Warning that the situation could worsen in the upcoming Ramadan, the RAB chief urged the public to immediately report any instances of rape, theft, or robbery to the force.
He said while robbery has not been fully controlled, intensified patrols, checkpoints, and joint operations with other law enforcement agencies are underway.
"Meanwhile, all RAB battalions are actively patrolling their respective areas. Additional patrols are being deployed continuously to enhance security in high-risk and key locations," he added.
Rahman also highlighted the issue of repeat offenders, noting that many robbers released on bail are continuing to commit crimes.
