Local residents of Shalbon area in Rangpur city on Thursday staged a demonstration demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of the accused people with the grisly murder of Shahidunnabi Jewel.

Jewel, a former employee of Rangpur Cantonment Public School, was beaten and burned to death by locals in Lalmonirhat on 29 October on allegation of hurting religious sentiment at Burimari of Lalmonirhat's Patgram upazila.

Protesting the incident, thousands of residents brought out a protest procession from Shalbon area, the ancestral house of Jewel, around 11:30 am.

They chanted slogans demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the accused people.

Later, they submitted a memorandum to the Rangpur deputy commissioner.

Earlier, the local residents kept shops closed from 10 am to 12 noon in different areas of the city including Shalbon, Indira Intersection, RCC intersection, Shiyalur intersection, Mistripara intersection.

The demonstrators also demanded to take visible action against people involved in the gruesome murder. Otherwise, they will go for greater movement, the protesters threatened from the rally.
