Keraniganj fire: Factory owner’s associate sent to jail, remand hearing tomorrow

A Dhaka court has sent a close associate of a gas lighter factory owner in Keraniganj to jail in connection with the fire that broke out a day earlier.
The order was issued today (5 April) by Senior Judicial Magistrate Tamanna Farah after police produced the accused before the court and sought a 10-day remand.
The hearing on the remand petition is scheduled for tomorrow (6 April), according to court sources.

The acused – Md Iman Ullah, alias Mastan, 50 – was arrested earlier in the day from the Kadamtali area of South Keraniganj.
The fire broke out around 12:30pm yesterday (4 April) at Messrs Acer Gas Pro Factory in DBZ Alley of Ambagicha, Kadamtali. Six bodies have been recovered, while several others sustained burn injuries and are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.
Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Jewel Rana of South Keraniganj Police Station filed a case against three individuals, including Iman Ullah. The other accused are factory owner Md Akram Ullah Akram and his son Ahnaf Akif Akram.
According to the remand plea, preliminary findings by the Fire Service suggest the blaze may have originated from flammable or raw materials stored inside the factory. Seven firefighting units brought the fire under control after about 90 minutes.
Police alleged that Iman Ullah played a key role in operating the factory illegally, using hazardous materials with the help of accomplices, which led to the casualties.
Investigators said remanding the accused is necessary for thorough interrogation to determine the full circumstances of the incident, identify other suspects, and recover hazardous materials used at the factory.
