Jucsu polls: Progressive student alliance announces 'Sompritir Oikyo' panel
The panel includes 11 female candidates – the highest declared by any panel so far.
A 25-member panel under the banner "Sompritir Oikyo", supported by the Bangladesh Students' Union, Jahangirnagar University (JU) Cultural Alliance, and the Indigenous Students' Association of JU, has been announced for the upcoming Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (Jucsu) election.
The panel nominated Amartya Roy for vice president (VP) post and Shoron Ehsan for general secretary (GS) post.
The announcement was made this afternoon (29 August) at the Sangshaptak sculpture near the university's central library by former student of the Economics Department and activist, Prapti Taposi.
The panel includes 11 female candidates – the highest declared by any panel so far. The panel also includes seven indigenous students, six from the Hindu community, three Buddhists, and two Christians.
Speaking about the panel, VP candidate Amartya Roy said, "After the mass uprising, we are witnessing the dominance of the majority and a looming threat of fascism in the coming days. In this reality, 'Sompritir Oikyo' seeks to convey a message of inclusivity."
He added that their goal is to make Jahangirnagar University a truly inclusive space where no group of people in Bangladesh faces persecution based on their religion or social identity.
Other nominees in the panel include Nur-e-Tamim Srot for assistant general secretary (male), Faria Zaman Niki for assistant general secretary (female), Sukanta Barman for education and research secretary, Soma Dumri for environment and nature conservation secretary, and Atikur Rahman Jony for literature and publication secretary.
Following the announcement, GS candidate Sharan Ehsan read out a written manifesto focusing on education and research, health and food, culture, social security, and religious rights.
