JU student detained with 21 bottles of foreign liquor from hall room
According to university sources, the liquor was recovered during a raid led by the hall Provost Professor Abdur Razzak around 9:30pm following a tip-off.
The hall administration of Jahangirnagar University (JU) detained a student last night (4 January) after recovering 21 bottles of foreign liquor from a room at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall.
According to university sources, the raid was conducted around 9:30pm following a tip-off.
The operation was led by the hall provost, Professor Abdur Razzak, with the participation of hall administration officials and members of the Hall Union.
The detained student was identified as Md Fazle Ajwad, a student of the Department of Government and Politics from the 2022–23 academic session (52nd batch). He is a residential student of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall and hails from Dewanganj upazila in Jamalpur district.
Hall administration sources said during the search, 21 bottles of foreign liquor were seized, including 17 bottles of vodka and four bottles of whisky, and the student was detained.
During primary interrogation, Ajwad told hall authorities that he had brought the liquor from his village home in Jamalpur for personal use. He later said the liquor had been collected from a border area of the district to celebrate the year's end on the 31st.
Acting Provost Professor Muhammad Abdur Razzak said an investigation committee would be formed to look into the incident.
He added that further action would be taken in accordance with the university's disciplinary rules based on the committee's recommendations.
Following the detention, his peers said Ajwad had contested for the post of Social Services Secretary from the Chhatra Dal panel in the Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall Union election during the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (Jucsu) and hall union elections held on 11 September last year.
However, the university unit of Chhatra Dal denied any organisational link with the student.
In a statement signed by its office secretary, Abdullah Antar, the organisation said Ajwad is neither a worker nor a post-holder of Chhatra Dal and described reports identifying him as such as false.
The statement also said Chhatra Dal had formed an open panel during the previous Jucsu elections, allowing non-political students to contest at the hall level.
It added that the organisation supports maximum punishment under existing state laws and university regulations in cases involving the recovery of drugs.
