JU expels 64 students, cancels certificates of 73 over July 2024 campus attacks
"A total of 229 students were accused of involvement in the attacks in July last year. Among them, 99 were former students and 130 are currently enrolled," the VC said during a press briefing

Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have permanently expelled 64 current students and cancelled the academic certificates of 73 former students for their involvement in the violent attacks on teachers and students during the anti-discrimination movement in July 2024.
The decision was announced by JU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan today (5 August), following a Syndicate meeting held last night (4 August).
The move comes after a long investigation into the campus unrest during last year's protest.
"A total of 229 students were accused of involvement in the attacks in July last year. Among them, 99 were former students and 130 are currently enrolled," the VC said during a press briefing.
"Of the current students, 64 have been permanently expelled based on the severity of their involvement. Additionally, 37 students have been suspended for two years, eight for one year, and one for six months. Twenty current students have been acquitted of all charges," he added.
Regarding the 99 former students, Prof Kamrul said, "The university has cancelled the academic certificates of 73 of them, while six have had their certificates suspended for two years. The remaining 20 were cleared of the charges."
"The investigation report will be submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal to ensure justice against the external attackers, key instigators, and police personnel who entered the campus in violation of university regulations," he further added.
