Prosecution closes indictment hearing in July atrocities case against Shamim Osman and 11 others
Following the completion of the prosecution's arguments, ICT-1 Chairman Justice Golam Mortuza Mazumder adjourned the hearing until 23 April, when the defence is scheduled to place its arguments seeking discharge of the accused.
The prosecution at International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) today (19 April) concluded its arguments on charge framing in a crimes against humanity case against former lawmaker Shamim Osman and 11 others over atrocities in Narayanganj during the July Mass Uprising.
During the hearing, the prosecution placed arguments detailing the complicity of the accused in the crimes, in which 10 people were killed in Fatullah and Signboard areas of Narayanganj on 19 July 21 and 5 August 2024.
Following the completion of the prosecution's arguments, ICT-1 Chairman Justice Golam Mortuza Mazumder adjourned the hearing until 23 April, when the defence is scheduled to place its arguments seeking discharge of the accused.
Other prominent accused in the case include Shamim's son Ayan Osman, his nephew Azmeri Osman, Ayan's brother-in-law Minhaj Uddin Ahmed Diki, and Shamim's brother-in-law Tanvir Ahmed Titu.
The prosecution on 19 January 2026 submitted the formal charge in the case. The tribunal, after taking the charges into cognisance, issued arrest warrants against the accused.
During the hearing, Prosecutor Abdus Sattar Palowan, who stood for the tribunal, told journalists that Shamim Osman was involved in the entire plan to kill students.
He also personally fired shots while holding a weapon. An audio clip of him was played before the tribunal. He said that they have submitted 18 video footages, audio evidence, and approximately 300 pages of documentary records.
A list of 61 eyewitnesses has also been provided.
In this case, three charges brought by the prosecution. In one charge, on 19 July 2024, in areas including Chashara and the Signboard area under Fatullah Police Station in Narayanganj Sadar Upazila, six people were killed: teenager Adil, Yasin, student Parvez, garment worker Russell, and six-year-old child Riya among them.
According to the second charge, on 21 July 2024, Abdur Rahman and Md Rakib were killed in front of the Bhuighar bus stand. The third charge states that on 5 August, Badiuzzaman and Abul Hasan were killed.
