JaPa-Gono Odhikar Parishad clash: Stick-wielding man in maroon polo shirt identified as constable
Police are also trying to find out under what circumstances and why he was released

The police have identified a man in a maroon polo shirt caught on video beating a Gono Odhikar Parishad leader with a stick during clashes between the party's activists and Jatiyo Party men before the latter's central office in the capital's Kakrail yesterday evening (29 August).
His name is Mizan, a police constable serving as the driver for the officer-in-charge of Dhaka's Paltan Police Station, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Ramna Division) Masud Alam told TBS today (30 August).
Footage shows the man striking people indiscriminately. When asked by law enforcement to identify himself during the clashes yesterday, he said he was a policeman.
DC Masud told TBS earlier today that the police had launched an investigation to find out his identity. "We are also trying to find out under what circumstances and why he was released."
Several people were injured as the clashes broke out between activists of the Jatiyo Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad in front of the former's central office yesterday.
Following the clashes, a large number of law enforcement personnel, including the army and police, were deployed to the scene to restore order, according to the police.
Jatiyo Party leaders alleged that activists of the Gono Odhikar Parishad launched an attack on them while marching past the party office.
On the other hand, Gono Odhikar Parishad leaders claimed that it was the Jatiyo Party's supporters who first hurled bricks and stones at their procession, provoking the clash.
Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in "critical" condition yesterday night, following the clashes, said the party's general secretary, Md Rashed Khan.
