Jamaat, BNP file election fraud petitions in HC
Advocate Mohammad Shishir confirmed the development to the media
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has filed petitions in the High Court alleging election fraud in three constituencies – Dhaka-6, Dhaka-7 and Gaibandha-4 – in the 13th National Parliamentary Elections.
Separately, the BNP lodged a similar petition concerning alleged irregularities in Sherpur-1 constituency.
The Election Appellate Tribunal of the High Court, led by Justice Zakir Hossain, accepted the petitions and issued orders on the matter today (26 February).
Advocate Mohammad Shishir confirmed the development to the media.
The court directed that all election materials from the contested constituencies be kept under the custody of the Election Commission. Notices were also issued to the winning candidates of the respective seats.
The petitions, filed by the losing candidates in the mentioned constituencies, seek a recount of votes due to alleged irregularities.
Earlier, on 19 February, a single bench of the High Court's Election Tribunal, formed under Section 49 of the Representation of the People Order, began hearing cases concerning election misconduct. Justice Zakir Hossain will preside over the hearings of these petitions.
