Residents of Mohammadpur and Basila held a human chain yesterday (17 August) morning at Beribadh Mor, demanding immediate repair of the dilapidated Mohammadpur-Basila road. Several social organisations jointly organised the protest.
People from all walks of life participated spontaneously, voicing frustration over the suffering caused by the road's poor condition.
The event was moderated by journalist and researcher AFM Moshior Rahman. Representatives from Amader Mohammadpur, Nirapod Sharak Chai (Nischa), Basila Social Platform, teachers' groups, and workers' unions spoke at the program.
Political leaders, including Jamaat-e-Islami central executive member Mobarak Hossain, BNP Dhaka North organising committee member Ahmad Ali, and other party representatives, expressed solidarity with the protesters.
Speakers said thousands of people use the road daily, yet it remains broken with potholes, mud, and stagnant water. Accidents, vehicle breakdowns, and traffic jams have become routine, costing commuters hours of work.
They maintained that the road is wide enough to be expanded into a four-lane road, but much of it remains occupied by stone traders, roadside shops, and encroaching vendors.
Speakers demanded urgent intervention by the relevant ministry, city corporation, and authorities to repair the road and free it from encroachment. Otherwise, they warned of road blockades and tougher programs.
