Imprisoned Indian fisherman dies of cardiac arrest in Bagerhat jail

An Indian fisherman who had been in Bangladeshi custody since mid-July died of cardiac arrest at the Bagerhat District Jail last night (14 November), according to jail authorities.
The deceased, Babul Das, 25, was the son of Nirmal Das from North 24 Parganas of West Bengal, India.
A post-mortem examination was conducted today (15 November) at the Bagerhat District Hospital morgue, the district Jail Superintendent Mostafa Kamal confirmed.
According to the jail authorities, the Bangladesh Coast Guard detained 34 Indian fishermen on 15 July for allegedly intruding into Bangladeshi waters. They were later handed over to Mongla Police Station, where a case was filed before they were produced in court. The court subsequently ordered their detention.
There are currently 71 Indian nationals held at Bagerhat District Jail, Mostafa Kamal said.
Babul's body has been preserved in cold storage at the district hospital morgue. It will be handed over to the appropriate authorities after completion of all legal formalities, he added.
