Home adviser urges police to become more people-friendly
Police personnel must win the public’s trust through respectful behaviour, a service-oriented mind-set, and sincerity, he says

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today (29 April) called on police officers to transform themselves into a truly people-friendly force.
"Police personnel must win the public's trust through respectful behaviour, a service-oriented mind-set, and sincerity," he said while addressing a views-exchange meeting with police officials at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Dhaka's Rajarbagh, on the occasion of Police Week 2025.
"Law enforcement must ensure that no citizen faces unnecessary harassment or suffering," he added.
The adviser underscored the importance of remaining politically neutral, saying, "Police must carry out their duties impartially, without seeking any special favours. Corruption and bribery must be avoided at all costs."
Highlighting the challenges officers face in their line of duty, he emphasised patience as a crucial quality. "Many issues can be resolved through discussion and restraint. Unnecessary use of force or baton charges must be avoided."
He also mentioned that steps are being taken to solve the transport crisis, including a proposal to procure 200 pickup vans for police stations, which is under consideration by the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase.
Recognising the current manpower shortage in the force, Jahangir instructed the inspector general of police (IGP) to take steps to expand the organisational structure (TO&E) of the police.
With crimes and threats becoming more complex and dynamic, he emphasised the critical need for enhanced training and ordered the appointment of capable officers to various training institutions.
The adviser also announced a number of initiatives aimed at improving police welfare.
These include removing the upper limit on risk allowances for constables and sub-inspectors, enabling them to receive higher compensation.
Additionally, the government is initiating a loan programme for sub-inspectors (SIs) and assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) to purchase motorcycles, with a request for the government to cover the interest.
During the meeting, discussions were also held on setting up more traffic boxes and shelters, providing tents for night patrol officers, and conducting strong operations to apprehend top drug traffickers.
