‘Current incessant rains not unusual’

The incessant rains all over the country for the last few days were not unusual and it will start receding from Friday night, said the Met office on Friday.
Some areas in the country may still see rains but that will subside on Saturday. There is nothing to worry about it but coastal areas will have to hoist distant cautionary signal-3 for another day or two, said meteorologist Abdur Rahman Khan.
The low pressure, crossing the West Bengal-Khulna coast near the West Bengal-Bangladesh border area, advanced further towards north-east and completed the course on Friday night, according to a Met office notification.

Meanwhile, the depression had been staying in the form of land depression in Faridpur, Madaripur and adjoining areas Thursday night. It would further proceed north-eastwards and wane gradually.
Wind pressure differences were prevailing in the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas and deep active clouds were forming. Barisal division, meanwhile, underwent the most rainfall.
Maximum sustained wind speed within 44km of the depression centre was about 40kph, rising to 50kph in gusts. Sea was rough near the depression centre, it said.
Meanwhile, Chattogram, Mongla, Payra seaports and Cox's Bazar were asked to hoist distant cautionary signal-3.
Due to the depression, low-lying areas of coastal districts: Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barisal, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram, and their offshore islands and chars were likely to be inundated by the wind-driven surge of 3-5 feet height above normal astronomical tide.
The Met office advised all fishing boats and trawlers in the Bay of Bengal to stay safe near the coast and not to go into the deep sea.

Meanwhile, city commuters in Chattogram suffered a lot while travelling as incessant rains created severe waterlogging in Bahaddarhat, Muradpur, Gate-2, GEC Circle, WASA Circle and Lalkhan Bazar, Agrabad, Halishahar, Patenga, Chandagaon, Bakalia and Chawkbazar roads.
Flash floods added to waterlogging in the city, with tidal water entering many low-lying areas, including Halishahar, Agrabad, Kattoli, Bandartila, Goshaildanga, Saltgola Crossing, Chaktai, Khatunganj, Patanga and Bandar.
Amid an acute shortage of public transport, people reached their destinations after long painful hours on the roads. City life almost came to a halt as most of the roads in low-lying areas went under knee- to waist-deep water following the heavy rains Thursday night.
Satkhira likely to be normal Saturday
Meanwhile, meteorologists forecast the weather may return to normal in Satkhira by Saturday as the influence of the existing low pressure area decreased in the coastal district.
On Friday morning, the authorities asked the coastal areas of the country to hoist local cautionary signal-4, which was later lowered to distant cautionary signal-3 in the afternoon.
Zulfikar Ali, an official of Bangladesh Meteorological Department in Satkhira, said the effects of strong winds and rain began to subside in the coastal areas from Friday at noon.
"It will be normal and warm from Saturday," he added.
