Chinhung Fibres Workers' Union sets new standard with Tk3.8 lakh donation for needy patients in Ctg

In a rare and inspiring gesture within the history of Bangladesh's labour movement, the Chinhung Fibres Workers and Employees Union has set a new precedent of humanitarian solidarity by donating Tk3.8 lakh to support the treatment of poor and underprivileged patients.
The donation was formally handed over to the authorities of Chattogram International Medical College Hospital this morning (23 July). The amount will be used exclusively for the medical treatment of economically disadvantaged patients.
A brief ceremony was held at the hospital's seminar room to mark the occasion. The hospital's Director, Dr Md Bakhtiar Alam, presided over the event, which was moderated by union General Secretary Ahmed Nabi.
Among the speakers were Professor Dr Mohammad Monirul Alam of the Anesthesia Department and Deputy Director Dr Abdur Razzak Khan, both of whom expressed heartfelt gratitude and described the donation as "a remarkable humanitarian gesture by a workers' organisation."
Representing the union at the event were its adviser and Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Trade Union Centre, Iftikhar Kamal Khan, central committee organiser Fazlul Kabir Mintu, union President Khokon Barua, Vice-President Md Faruk, and other key leaders.
Explaining motivation behind the initiative, Union General Secretary Ahmed Nabi, "Since Chinhung Fibres Limited ceased its operations, the very existence of our union has been under threat. We consider the funds collected through workers' contributions to be a sacred trust.
"Following the guidance of our advisers Iftikhar Kamal Khan and Fazlul Kabir Mintu, we have chosen to dedicate this money to serve distressed patients. We firmly believe it will be used responsibly, and this decision will further strengthen the workers' trust in the union."
The hospital administration welcomed the donation as being of "immense humanitarian value," adding that this marked the beginning of a new, compassionate chapter in the country's labour movement.
"In the interest of transparency and accountability, we will provide a financial report every two months detailing how the funds are spent," they announced.
At a time when labour unions in Bangladesh often face criticism over controversies and mismanagement, the Chinhung Fibres Workers' Union's bold and visionary initiative stands out as a powerful example of ethical leadership and social responsibility.
It is not just a monetary donation — it symbolises the deep-rooted commitment of workers' organisations to the broader welfare of the working class and society at large.
